SESSIONS & ENVIRONMENTS
IHHT vs. altitude tents
A session through a mask or a reduced-oxygen sleeping environment. Similar vocabulary does not mean the same exposure.
THE KEY DIFFERENCE
IHHT alternates oxygen levels within a session. An altitude tent creates a reduced-oxygen environment, commonly for longer exposure during rest or sleep.

METHODS, NOT PROMISESScroll sideways to compare →
| What matters | IHHT | Altitude tent |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery | Air delivered directly through a breathing mask. | A generator supplies oxygen-reduced air to an enclosure. |
| Exposure pattern | Repeated lower- and higher-oxygen phases. | Extended lower-oxygen exposure; alternating hyperoxia is not its defining feature. |
| Place in a routine | A dedicated session, typically while awake and resting. | Often incorporated into overnight or extended rest periods. |
| Space to consider | The system, seating, tubing, ventilation, and access. | The enclosure, bed or rest area, generator, and ventilation. |
| What to verify | The complete session controls and monitoring approach. | Enclosure compatibility, air delivery, monitoring, noise, and sleep comfort. |
| Research relevance | Match results to the interval pattern and studied population. | Match results to total exposure and the athlete’s training program. |
General method comparison. Individual devices, protocols, and intended uses vary.

the conclusion.
The tent itself does not reproduce a complete IHHT protocol. A small placebo-controlled altitude-tent study did not improve its measured cycling outcomes. That does not settle every altitude-training question, but it is a reason to examine the actual protocol instead of assuming an “altitude” label guarantees performance gains.
