THE IHHT GLOSSARY
Same language. Clearer understanding.
A plain-language guide to the terms around IHHT, hypoxic training, and oxygen equipment.

13 terms
- IHTIntermittent hypoxic training
A broad term for planned exposures to reduced-oxygen air. It does not by itself specify a higher-oxygen recovery phase; check the complete protocol.
Understand the oxygen cycle- IHHTIntermittent hypoxic–hyperoxic training
An approach alternating lower-oxygen and oxygen-enriched air, usually delivered through a mask while at rest.
Explore the method- IHHEIntermittent hypoxic–hyperoxic exposure
A term used in research for alternating hypoxic and hyperoxic exposure at rest. Read the actual study protocol rather than relying on the acronym alone.
Read the research- Hypoxic airA lower-oxygen breathing mixture
In this equipment context, air with a lower oxygen concentration than ambient air. Hypoxia itself refers to inadequate oxygen availability in tissues.
- Hyperoxic airOxygen-enriched air
Air that provides a higher oxygen exposure than usual. Concentration, pressure, and duration all matter; “more oxygen” is not automatically a better dose.
- NormobaricAt ordinary ambient pressure
A reduced-oxygen environment can be created without reducing room pressure. Normobaric hypoxic systems change the gas mixture.
- HypobaricAt reduced ambient pressure
At natural altitude, lower barometric pressure reduces the partial pressure of inspired oxygen. This differs from removing oxygen from air at normal pressure.
- Hypoxic generatorEquipment that supplies oxygen-reduced air
A category of equipment used with a compatible mask or enclosure. Do not assume every hypoxic generator can deliver the higher-oxygen phase needed for IHHT.
Compare the equipment- Altitude tentA reduced-oxygen enclosure
An enclosure supplied by a hypoxic generator, often used during sleep or extended rest. Its exposure pattern differs from a mask-based IHHT session.
Compare the methods- EWOTExercise with oxygen therapy
A commercial term for exercising while breathing oxygen-enriched air. Exact equipment and protocols vary.
Compare EWOT and IHHT- HBOTHyperbaric oxygen therapy
Clinical treatment involving near-pure oxygen inside a pressurized chamber. Oxygen breathing at normal room pressure is not clinical HBOT.
Compare HBOT and IHHT- FiO₂Fraction of inspired oxygen
The share of the inhaled gas mixture that is oxygen. It describes the air being breathed, not the oxygen level in your blood.
- SpO₂Peripheral oxygen saturation
An estimate from a pulse oximeter of how much oxygen is carried by hemoglobin in arterial blood. It is a monitoring measurement, not a complete assessment of suitability.
